New Series for Propel starts Wed at 7pm

The Cross:

People wear a cross on necklaces, sport one on bumper stickers and even slap on across T-shirts, but what does the cross really stand for? What does it really mean? Over the next two weeks, we will take a look at the cross in a different way, a way that moves beyond gratitude and nostalgia to a way of life. The cross teaches us that we live so we can die, and we die so we can live.

Week One (Wed April 4)

Most of us think of the cross as the place where Jesus died for us. That is true. But it’s also about more than that. The cross isn’t just the place where Jesus died. The cross is the place where we die too. Christianity is not just about an event that happened thousands of years ago. It’s about being a consistant follower of Jesus. This week students will discover the ongoing, sacrificial life Jesus called His disciples to lead—a life characterized by the cross.

Week Two (Wed April 11)

If the cross is where we come to die, then how do we live? Because the cross isn’t the end of the story—there’s also an empty tomb. The cross isn’t just about death, it’s about life. We die to something, but we also live as well. After all, Jesus says: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10 NIV). This week, we’ll talk about not settling for a half-life, but a life that is full.

We begin a new series this Wednesday: The Beautiful Trade

Series Overview

The book of Mark is the shortest of the four Gospels, but it’s packed with one central message—that Jesus wants us to trade up. He wants us to trade what we know, what we think, how we see others for something better. It’s a beautiful trade, because not only do we exchange something for something different, we exchange our lives, our perspectives for something better. It’s a message that’s at the heart of the Easter story, but it’s shown through Jesus’ interactions long before the crucifixion and resurrection.

Session 1: Exchange (Mar 14)

Have you ever had to do research for a class paper? Sometimes you start out with your topic thinking that you know exactly what you are going to write about. But then, after you start reading some books and digging into the research, you realize that you actually know very little about the topic and have to start from scratch and just learn. You have to trade what you think you know for what you don’t. And it’s the same when it comes to following Jesus. Sometimes we have to trade what we think we know—about Jesus, about what is best for us, about what we think about others—in order to fully participate with God in what we don’t know.

Session 2: Swap (Mar 21)

“That group of people is too weird. I don’t hang out with those types of people—or they don’t hang out with me.” Most of us have said or thought things like this before—or heard them said about us. We categorize people based on superficial things, and then we judge them, write them off. But when we do, we miss out on something beautiful. We miss out on the opportunity to live out the message Jesus came to proclaim. We give up the chance to trade judgment for love. And that’s not just about following a set of standards or rules. It’s about understanding that every person, including you, is valuable and worthy and has something to offer.

Session 3: Switch (Mar 28)

“Who do you say I am?” This is the question Jesus asked His disciples centuries ago, and it is the same one He asks us today. When we answer Him, when we decide to trade what we know for what we don’t and to trade judgment for love, we are making a decision to also trade in our old lives for new ones. We are trading our “talk” for our “do.” We are choosing to put our faith into action. This may mean something different for each of us. But when we answer Jesus’ question, “Who do you say I am?” we are making a statement with our mouths and with our lives. We are accepting His offer to trade in something good for something better.

Hey Propellers,

Last week we began our series TMI and you were asked to take part in an experiment. Remember these questions?
• Have I said anything that I wouldn’t have said to someone face-to-face?
• Do people only know me by what I post online, or are there people who know the real me in my everyday real life?
• Is there anything that I wish I wouldn’t have said?
• Did I say anything without thinking through how it would be received?
• Is there anything that I wish I would have said?
• Is there anything that I would still say, but just say it differently?
• Is what I said in a post, text or e-mail helpful? Beneficial?
How goes it?

This week is week two in our series TMI.
Dirty Little Secrets (Wed Feb 29)
There’s a time and a place to share your T.M.I., but there’s also a person. That’s right. We all need someone in our lives who knows us—really knows us. We need to have someone who we can trust our secrets to, someone who we can tell what’s really going on. Someone we can go to and say, “I really messed this up.” Because when our secrets become visible, when we no longer have to work so hard at hiding them, they lose their power over us and we are free to experience God’s grace and forgiveness.

Look forward to seeing you at Propel @ 7PM
God Bless and love ya’ll

Here is what we are talking about this week:

Session Three: Do You Know Me? (Wed Feb 8)

So you decided to fight, to stay in your relationship with God even though you’re feeling not that into Him. And for some of you, you’ve already seen a big change. There’s a new connection. There’s excitement. But for others, you’re fighting and nothing’s happening. You’re working, but you’re not getting anything in return. So what’s the problem? It may be that “me” is getting in the way, that your focus is on you. And in the process, you have made God very small, boring and predictable—a God you think you know, but One who is actually so much bigger than us.

January 30, 2012

This week we will continue our series titled “Not That Into You”. This week’s discussion is:
When you’re not that into a relationship, you have a choice—to stay or to go. God has made it very clear in the Bible that He’s not going anywhere. He’s in. But we’re the ones who struggle with the choice, and that struggle sometimes involves fighting our own feelings and perceptions. It’s a fight that we have to be willing to take on, and a decision each of us has to make. And though it may feel like it, it’s not one-sided, God isn’t going anywhere. So are you going to fight your own tendencies to pull away? Are you going to fight for your relationship with God?

Important Dates to Remember for February:

Propel Wednesday 7PM

January 24, 2012

Here is what we are talking about this Wednesday. I look forward to seeing you at Propel at 7pm.

NOT THAT INTO YOU
Every one of us has experienced it at some point. At one time, we were really into a relationship—whether that’s a friendship or a dating relationship—and now, well, not so much. We’re just not that into it anymore. So we walk away or we let the relationship die. But what happens when that relationship you’re not that into anymore is the one you have with God? You were really into Him at one point. You were feeling connected, directed, close. Now it feels like nothing. How do you deal with it?

Session One: The Breakup? (Wed Jan 24)
There is a natural ebb and flow to our relationships, isn’t there? There are times when we feel really close to someone, and times when we don’t. The reasons vary, but there are times when we’re just not feeling that into a relationship. It’s true of our friendships and other relationships, but what happens when it happens in our relationship with God? And when it does, why is it so difficult to admit it?

Love ya’ll and God Bless,

January 16, 2012

Hey Propellors,

Last week, we talked about how God is everywhere and if we pause and look, we can find Him. But sometimes that’s really hard to do, isn’t it? Sometimes life gets really hard. Sometimes life hurts a lot. Sometimes pain and disappointment seem pretty intense and God seems really far away. But even in those moments, God is there. In fact, God is known for taking even the worst situations and bringing something good out of them. We just can’t always see that until we pause . . . and then discover that God is closer than your breath.

Throughout this series “Pause,” I have encouraged you to take time to pause. Have you tried it?

What can you cut out to make more time to be still? What could you say no to? Are you finding time to be silent and still? Has it been hard for you to slow down? What has been the biggest distraction to you? What has helped you as you have been learning to pause throughout the week?

I would love to hear how it is going.
This week we will discuss that as we pause we can discover God.
Can’t wait to see you at Propel: 7pm on Wednesday.

love you all,
sammyD
