10 Date Night Ideas

September 20, 2008

On September 25 a new movie is coming out by the creators of “Facing the Giant’s.” The new movie is called “Fireproof.” It’s about a firefighter who has lost the fire for his relationship with his wife. The following is a list of possible date night ideas you might want to implement into your marriage so that you can keep the home fires burning.

  • Spend an evening reading together
  • Play Hide and Seek- hide treasures throughout your home take turns seeking them
  • Explore a nearby art exhibit/museum together
  • Take a dance class together
  • Plan a date using text messages (don’t do this while driving)
  • Go to a sporting event that neither of you have ever attended or knows anything about
  • Go to open houses on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Discus your likes and dislikes together
  • Take a walk in the park, pack a picnic lunch
  • Take a time-out. Take a Saturday and turn off the phone, cell, computer- play through your day with NO SCHEDULE
  • Revisit your past key romantic moments- ( i.e. The day you met, Your first date, Your first kiss, Challenges you faced together, The proposal)

Create a keepsake video with the two of you talking about these moments or gather photos and make a date night scrapbook or YouTube

20th Street ReRouted

September 3, 2008

Greenbrier Church’s 20th Street Ministry began several years ago as a means to bring together young adults in the 20’s age group for connection through small groups and fellowship activities. The ministry has grown and developed over the years, with strong relationships at the core. As young adult newcomers have joined the church, many have plugged into 20th Street small groups and events with great connections. Although thriving, the newest challenge of this ministry is that most of those that make up this group are now well into their 20’s or even early 30’s, have married and started families, and are simply in a different life stage, while newcomers may be just finishing high school and are looking for a place to get connected. Because of this large gap, the time to restructure and redefine this ministry has come in order to ensure we are meeting the needs of all.

We are, therefore, pleased to introduce the new structuring of 20th Street ministries and the launch of a new ministry called inROUTE!

What is inROUTE?

inROUTE is a small group based ministry primarily targeting those in their mid-twenties to mid-thirties. Although a majority of this group will most likely be married and some will have children, the ministry is open to married couples, married couples with children, and single adults with or without children. All are welcome and will find a place here. Our focus is on deep relationships and spiritual growth. We facilitate both of these goals through small groups, social activities, and outreach. Small groups will have various emphases to meet the needs of its members and may include targeted Bible Studies, parenting, marital issues, as well as prayer and personal ministry time.

Brent and Marsha VanNorman lead the inROUTE ministry, along with a core leadership team.

What is 20th Street?

20th Street is a ministry under inROUTE that will primarily focus on the needs of those at post-high school age to mid-twenties at various life stages. A new small group is emerging for post-high school (college age) young adults as we enter the Fall semester and will be led by Jason and Melanie Bedogne. While many in this group may be in college, some may have chosen instead to immediately enter the work force or a trade school. All are welcome. As with inROUTE, the focus of this small group will be relationships and connection, along with spiritual growth and discussion. In addition, a weekly college-age small group for “LOST” fans will be launched and led by Daniel Perez.

See the Greenbrier Church Small Group Booklet for a list of all inROUTE and 20th Street small groups. If you have any questions about this ministry, or would like to be involved, please feel free to contact Brent and Marsha VanNorman 757.482.2701 or any of the small group leaders.

Hearing His Voice

August 27, 2008

I’ve been meditating a lot lately on the Shema that we’ve been learning about on Sunday mornings this month. The words “Hear Oh Israel, the Lord Our God, The Lord is One” have been ringing loudly in my ears. It is so very important to HEAR from God and then do what He says. It can make all the difference in your life. It has in mine…

One day about 25 years ago, I passed a sign for a church on the corner of Volvo and Greenbrier Parkway. Just newly married, we had been searching for a place to call “our church.” It felt like the Lord said “That’s the place for you.” I wasn’t a keen hearer back then but Terry and I went a few Sundays later and soon found our place to call HOME. We’ve made lifelong relationships with individuals and families we’ve met along the way. Our lives would be so different if we had not heard that voice and obeyed the word we heard. Our daughter may have never met her husband at youth group. Our son would have never met his 3 lifelong best friends. God is so good to us. He’s always speaking but do we have ears to HEAR? What has the Lord been speaking to you?

On My Way-”inROUTE”

August 27, 2008

Have you ever gotten a text or call from someone that says…”I’m on my way? It is a way of saying that you’ve left but you haven’t arrived quite yet. Our spiritual lives are much like that. We’ve left one destination bound for another. That’s where the name “inROUTE” came from.

A cool thing about this journey we’re on is we get to go to the next place with friends that we meet along the way. Relationships are begun and nurtured into covenant friendships that are almost like family. We even get the privilege of inviting anyone and everyone to go along with us.

This trip is a fantastic adventure. Sit back and enjoy the ride and especially the company you meet “inROUTE.”
